The Nike Air Penny 3 “Black/Varsity Royal” is an original colorway of Anfernee Hardaway’s third signature shoe with Nike that originally released in 1997. Nike finally brought back the “Black/Varsity Royal” makeup of the Air Penny 3 in November 2020 after spending what seemed like far too many years in the vault. Like the original, the modern “Black/Varsity Royal” is propped up by a black Posite shell on the mid-panel and forefoot. Buttery black tumbled leather appears on the toe, eyelets, and collar. A smooth cut of black suede is located on the heel. A small black embroidered Swoosh logo is stitched onto the heel adjacent to the circular “1 Cent” emblem. Tonal neoprene overlays are placed atop the black mesh tongue and two black nylon pull tabs with Varsity Royal accenting on the tongue and on the heel assist in easy on/off wearability. “Air” embroidery on the back of the shoe and a large visible Air unit in the heel of the black midsole round out the look of this classic basketball shoe.
