adidas introduces the next chapter of the FutureCraft project with the adidas FutureCraft 4D. This shoe does away with the 3D-printed midsole seen on the FutureCraft 3D, instead introducing Digital Light Synthesis technology – a bespoke way of tailoring footwear to cater to a runner based on their individual needs. A product of collaborative work between the German brand and Silicon Valley-based tech company Carbon, the midsole on the FutureCraft 3D was created with light and oxygen thanks to the latter’s programmable liquid resin platform; it uses light to create the shape of the sole, followed by heat to set it, which finally allows the team to create a print from scratch. adidas released the FutureCraft 4D in a limited run of 300 pairs to friends and family in April 2017, with more sneakers slated to release later in the year.
