The Nike Waffle Trainer 2 “Fireberry” is a throwback design that harkens back to the brand’s most popular performance running shoes of the 1970s. The Waffle Trainer is in the same category as early Nike running shoes like the LDV, Waffle Racer, and Daybreak, three styles that have been used in one way or another by fashion brands such as sacai and Undercover in collaborations with Nike in recent years. The Waffle Trainer 2 “Fireberry” appears as if it were directly sourced from the pages of an early Nike mail order catalog from decades past. Head-turning, Fireberry-colored lightweight nylon forms the base of the shoe and appears on the toe and mid-panel. The same purplish-pink hue is used on the suede overlays on the toe, eyelets, and heel. An orange leather Swoosh graces both sides and old school “NIKE” branding appears on the orange leather heel tab. The same shade of sunset orange can be found on the inner lining. A classic “Nike” logo with an orange Swoosh dots the cream nylon tongue tag on the cream nylon tongue. Exposed yellow foam peers out from either side of the tongue for a throwback to how Nike used to construct its running shoes. A soft foam midsole provides all-day comfort. Release date: May 29, 2021
